It is with love and gratitude for a long life well lived that we announce the passing of Toby Greenberg at the age of 102.
Toby was the daughter of Rose and Benjamin Bock who were Eastern European immigrants. She grew up at 3rd and Porter St. in South Philadelphia in a Jewish Orthodox home and graduated from South Philadelphia High School for Girls. During the late 1930s she met Leonard Mantell who she would eventually marry after the War in 1946. They lived with Leonard’s parents on the grounds of the Gulph Mills Golf Club for several years (which Toby thoroughly enjoyed).
Toby was widowed in 1967 and was introduced to Martin Greenberg whom she married in 1972. They spent 43 years together living a wonderful life in Cherry Hill, NJ and then Hallandale Florida. They spent time at the Jersey Shore and aboard Marty’s beloved Toby G, also taking car trips across the country and frequent cruises.
Throughout her life, Toby enjoyed a sterling group of friends including Shirley London, Shirley Speen, and the lifelong Logan and Mt Airy couples.
Though not religious, she was always proud of her Jewish Heritage and was an ardent supporter of Israel, traveling with a synagogue group in 1969. She was a member of Keneseth Israel synagogue for many years, as well as Hadassah.
Toby was predeceased by husbands Leonard and Marty, brothers Max, Charles and Sam.
She is survived by her son Richard E. Mantell (Anita Elfman), stepson Bruce Greenberg (Lynn) as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and Bock nieces and nephews. Last but not least is the incredible and deeply loved Marcia Walcott who was her caregiver for the last twelve years.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Jewish Federation of Philadelphia or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
