Susan Kristiansson Sternthal (nee Weiss), a beloved elementary school teacher and cherished family matriarch, passed away on February 22, 2026, in Media, Pennsylvania, shortly after her 81st birthday. Born on February 11, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Susan dedicated over 30 years of her life to shaping young minds within the School District of Philadelphia. Her profound impact on her students was a testament to her passion for education and her innate ability to inspire those around her.
Susan's educational journey began at Olney High School, where she was her Class President. At The Pennsylvania State University, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree and followed that with a Master of Education from Temple University. Throughout her life, she exemplified the virtues of perseverance and dedication, not just as a teacher, but as a devoted volunteer. Her kindness extended beyond the classroom, where she contributed her time at various synagogues, including the Germantown Jewish Centre, and she served as a Park House Guide at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
A strong-willed woman with a vibrant personality, Susan was known for her infectious laughter and her unwavering support for her family. She structured her life around her grandchildren, Josh, Annabelle, Sammy, Rebecca, and Julia, frequently shopping for them and taking them to shows and activities that created lasting memories. They were the lights of her life, as were her daughters, Vikki (Harvey) and Katy (Neil). They will forever hold onto the countless joyous moments and laughter shared with her.
Susan's love for sports, especially those of her beloved Penn State and Philadelphia teams, often fueled spirited conversations among friends and family. Her ability to find humor in every situation made her a source of strength for those who knew her. She believed that laughter could conquer all, and she carried this philosophy through every challenge that life presented.
Remembering her are her daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren, all of whom were profoundly influenced by her warmth and enthusiasm for life. She is also survived by her brother, Albert (Karen), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Susan joins her deceased family members, including her parents, Flora and Paul Weiss, leaving a legacy of love and compassion that will resonate through the lives she touched.
As we celebrate the life of Susan Kristiansson Sternthal, we reflect on her role as a loving mother, a fun grandmother, a passionate educator, and a generous soul whose laughter will echo in our hearts forever.
