Steven Herring, 72, passed away on April 11, 2026, after a long illness. He lived at Neshaminy Manor for the last five years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Abraham “Manny” and Shirley Herring.
Born and raised in Northeast Philadelphia, Steve was the middle of three boys. He was a 1971 graduate of Northeast High School and a 1979 graduate of Millersville University with a degree in Education. Over his thirty-plus year career, Steve taught Emotional Support classes at LaBrum Middle School and Hartranft Elementary in the School District of Philadelphia.
Having earned the rank of Eagle Scout in his teens, he went on to enjoy a lifetime of camping, hiking and backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, western U.S. trails and in national parks across the U.S. and Canada. He loved to relax around a campfire with a full-sized or backpacking guitar in hand, playing and singing, quoting Lord of the Rings and planning his next adventure. His camping excursions included his annual pilgrimage to the Philadelphia Folk Festival with his friends and cousins for forty years.
Steve was an accomplished chef and loved nothing more than cooking gourmet meals and sharing fine wines with family and close friends.
He is survived by his wife Anne, brother Larry and sister-in-law Paula McGourty, brother Jeff and sister-in-law Leslie McLean, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates the care and support from the staff of Neshaminy Manor and Caring Hospice. Services will be private.
Donations in Steve’s memory may be made to Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), www.scouting.org, or the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, www.appalachiantrail.org.
