ASHER

STEVE, a leading antitrust class action attorney, passed away on April 27, 2015 after a yearlong battle with melanoma. Over the years Steve was appointed lead counsel by federal courts in more than 25 separate cases, recovering damages distributed to thousands of victims of antitrust violations throughout the country. Steve graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1965 where he was captain of the Debating Team. In 1969 he graduated from Johns Hopkins University where he majored in Philosophy and was elected by the senior class to speak at graduation. In 1973 he graduated from NYU School of Law where he was an editor of the NYU Law Review, and awarded the Edwin Cahn award given to the outstanding Law Review editor. Steve began his law career as an associate at Willkie Farr & Gallagher and then at Rosenman Colin Freund Lewis & Cohen in New York.
In 1980 he married Ina "Louie" Elfant and moved back to Philadelphia. In 1987 he became a partner at Kohn Savett Klein & Graf where he concentrated his practice on antitrust class actions. Since 2005 he has been a named partner at Weinstein Kitchenoff & Asher, LLC. He served as chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association Antitrust Committee, as a member of the Steering Committee of the Antitrust Litigation Forum, and has given CLE lectures on Antitrust Litigation to attorneys throughout Pennsylvania.
Steve has been actively involved in Jewish affairs. He has served on the boards of the Perelman Jewish Day School and the Akiba Hebrew Academy. He served as Chair of the Philadelphia Jewish Law Day event for two years, and in recent years has served on the board of the Johns Hopkins University Hillel. Steve has been a member of Lower Merion Synagogue for more than 30 years. Steve's passion in life was rowing on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. Since 1990 Steve and Louie have belonged to Bachelors Barge Club, the oldest rowing club in the United States, founded in 1853. Steve has raced in the Braxton Regatta on the Schuylkill River, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, and the Diamond States Regatta in Delaware. Steve and Louie began going to Camp Ramah in the Poconos when they were both 12, and both of them continued as counselors when they were in college. They married in 1979, are parents of four children: Simma Kupchan (Charles), and Aviva, Jacob, and Rena Asher, and grandparents of Maia and Nina Kupchan.
Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral Services 1 P.M. precisely at GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL SACKS, 6410 N. Broad St., Philadelphia. Int. Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.
