Shirley Fairbanks Hasday, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2018. Born on December 26, 1930, Shirley grew up in the Fairmount section of the city and graduated from the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, she worked at a local clothing mill before meeting a young sailor named David, who captured her heart.
They married on May 24, 1952, and began their life together honeymooning in Niagara Falls. Shirley started her career, while working full-time and raising two children, by earning an associate degree in the field of education. As a classroom assistant in special education for 27 years, Shirley worked in Philadelphia public schools including The Hill School and Spring Garden School.
She loved the arts, and for more than 30 years was a patron of the Walnut Street Theater. Her passions were gardening and sewing, although she also dabbled with paints and pastels. She had her personal travel agent in her daughter, and together they traveled the world, including Hawaii, Alaska, and Italy. Closer to home, Shirley loved the Jersey shore and any place that had caves to explore. An avid reader, she was a huge fan of Jean Auel and Diana Gabaldon. She enjoyed being a docent at the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Philadelphia Zoo.
Shirley was a kind, caring soul, with a smile that could light up a room. She loved writing "cute" poetry, and she often crafted original pieces for special people in her life.
Shirley was the proud mom of her two children, Robert and Judy, and the grandmother of Benjamin. She is also survived by many friends whose lives she touched deeply. She will be missed by so many.
Robert and Judy Hasday would like to express their gratitude for the tender and compassionate care provided by the doctors, nurses, and support staff at the Cardiothoracic ICU and Cardiothoracic SDICU at Lankenau Hospital.
Memorial services will be held at Goldsteins' Rosenberg's Raphael-Sacks Funeral Home, 310 2nd St Pike, Southampton, PA 18966, Sunday at 2:30 pm. Guests are invited to return to the Hasday Residence following the Memorial Service for food, drinks, and sharing memories.
