SHELDON KATZ on March 4, 2025. Beloved husband of Ruth (nee Rosenfeld); Loving father of Michelle Katz (Adam Stern), Gary Katz (Heather Backes Katz), and Jeffrey Katz; Devoted son of the late Phyllis and Milton Katz; Dear brother of the late Andrea Ellen Katz; Adoring grandfather of Miriam, Eliana, Emmett, and Osten. Sheldon was born in Philadelphia, PA and always lived in the Philadelphia area. He graduated from the inaugural class at George Washington High School in 1965 and entered college at Temple University at age 16 where he majored in Physics, ultimately obtaining a PhD in the subject. He loved how physics explained what was most essential in the universe and delighted in sharing that passion with others through teaching as an Assistant Professor at Villanova University, a Franklin Institute volunteer and a community college professor during retirement. He transitioned to a career in radar engineering for defense contractor, Lockheed Martin, developing technology to keep planes flying and ships from sinking for over 30 years. Sheldon was devoted to all of his family, most especially his one true love, Ruth, with whom he was married for over 50 years. He was a deeply involved father, packing lunches, helping with homework, and coaching softball and baseball teams. He planned epic family road trips, cherishing the uninterrupted family time. He loved each moment he spent with his four grandchildren. He valued his participation in Jewish life including teaching Torah reading and singing in the choir at Beth Emeth in Northeast Philadelphia. He had varied interests including photography, his beloved Phillies, and reading science fiction and mysteries. His quiet, unassuming and patient manner masked a keen intellect and deep curiosity. Most especially, he always brought kindness and love to each of his relationships with family and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral Services, Friday, 11:30 AM precisely at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Funeral Directors Suburban North, 310 2nd St. Pike, Southampton, PA. Int. Roosevelt Memorial Park. Shiva will be observed at his late residence Friday following interment, Saturday from 6-8 PM, Sunday from 1-4 PM and 6-8 PM, and Monday 6-8 PM.
