Sara Paul was born on September 7, 1948 to Joseph and Sophia Paul. She died on July 31, 2026. Sara graduated from Northeast High School and later from Shippensburg State College with a degree in Library Science. She worked for over 30 years for the Philadelphia School district both in city schools and on loan to Overbrook School for the Blind. She "translated" many books in Braille so the blind students could "read" more books. This is a labor intensive process requiring many hours per book one letter at a time of creating words that could be read by the students using their fingers. She also mentored many students in the school district and at Overbrook helping them get into college and helping them to stay and graduate. She did not have children feeling that the students were like children to her.
Her greatest passion outside school was science fiction literature. She and her husband Gene Olmsted attended and were involved in planning and helping to run science fiction conventions both all over the United States and internationally in countries such as Japan and England. She enjoyed corresponding with the friends around the world that she made in these conventions. She enjoyed having large parties attended by as many as 100 people. She was a good friend to many people who had suffered financial loss and needed a place to stay, allowing them to live with her and Gene.
Another passion of hers was family connections both with her own relatives such as the families of her Aunt Martha Feldman and her cousins Sam and Morris Feldman and their various life events and gatherings, and those of her husband Gene's family as well.
She had suffered from physical problems from many years some so severe that she was unable to walk for over a year but she always managed to overcome them and recover from them until her final illness which has debilitated her for over 2 years prevented her from recovery.
Her brother remains eternally grateful that when their parents developed cancer at the same time in 1988-1989, Sara took a six month sabbatical from the School District in order to help them get through their final days which were more bearable to them because of her presence and assistance.
She is survived by her beloved husband Gene Olmsted, her brother Robert Paul (Cynthia), nephew Joshua Paul, niece Rachel Paul (Zak Moore) and her children Zoe and Ariel Moore, cousin Sam Feldman (Barbara Donsky Jacobs Feldman) and their children Brett Feldman (Corinne), Kraig Feldman (Justina) and the children of her deceased cousin Morris Feldman; Reta Adler (Brian) and Hope Snow (Kevin), cousin Charles Korn (Grace), and numerous other cousins and other relatives on the Paul and Olmsted sides.
Funeral services will be held at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Funeral Directors Inc. (6410 N Broad St. Philadelphia, PA 19125) at 12 PM on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Interment to immediately follow at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery.
