SAMUEL "SAM", born Aug. 24, 1918 in France in route to the U.S. by his mother Anna and father Ben Kenis. Settling in New York City area he completed a Liberal Arts degree at NYU. After joining the Chester NJ Police Dept. he became a Federal Officer rising to the rank of Sergeant and formed one of the first Canine Patrols in existence in the U.S. originating at the Ticatinny Federal Arsenal in NJ. Mr. Kanis joined the U.S. Coast Guard stationed at Curtis Bay MD where from 1943 through 1946 he trained the first military war dogs for the Coast Guard, Navy and Army. He was responsible for the first military canine training manuals and methods of instruction. After the war he assisted in the formation of the State of Israel working with various groups. In later years he worked as an executive in the construction and contracting business as an insurance adjuster. Mr. Kanis was a Free and Accepted Mason, a member of the Athelstan Lodge #482. He was the husband of the late Phyllis Kanis and companion of the late Dorothy Silverman. He is survived by his son Bruce and his stepchildren Norma Chankin-Eck and husband Mark, Jacquelyn Peterson and husband Thomas, Peter and Barbara Weiss, and Steve and Tina Silverman; 5 step grand-children, Beth, Scott, Andrea, Eric, and Samantha; 6 step great- grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral Services Wed. 11:30 A.M. precisely GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL SACKS SUBURBAN NORTH, 310 Second St. Pike, Southampton. Int. Har Nebo Cem. Family will return to the residence of Peter and Barbara Weiss.
