Salomon (Sal) Jaques Berenholz, beloved husband of his deceased wife, Doris Berenholz, of nearly 70 years, beloved brother of Victor, loving father of Rochelle (Steven), Deborah Robin (Mark), and Ellen, loving grandfather of six, and great-grandfather of two, passed away at age 97, at his home at Beaumont at Bryn Mawr in the evening of November 13, 2023.
He was deeply loved and admired by his family and many friends. Born in Paris, Sal studied business and law, with the intention of becoming an attorney. His education was stopped short when the Germans occupied Paris, and later the rest of the country. After an arduous escape from France in December of 1942, the family emigrated to the United States in late 1943. Sal was an extremely intelligent and resourceful man, who along with his brother Victor, became a manufacturer of women’s clothing. He spoke five languages, was extremely interested in the arts, was a philanthropist with a special dedication to Pagus: Africa, an NGO founded and directed by his daughter Ellen, whose mission is to empower youth in Ghana. He was also committed to supporting HIAS, an organization that helped his family settle in the United States. He and his wife Doris spent much of the year in Paris and traveling. He was a great reader and self-educated man and was extremely well informed about history and politics in particular. Most of all he was generous and loving and was well loved by all who knew him.
