Ruth Barbara Cohen

Born March 25, 1934 – Died December 13, 2023

Ruth Barbara (Miller) Cohen, a resident of Rydal Park, 89, died on Wednesday December 13th surrounded by family. She was the loving wife of Robert S. Cohen for 67 years.

Born in Newark NJ, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Jennie (Goldberg) Miller, sister of the late Fred Miller. She graduated from Upsala College in 1956 and after raising her children, earned her Master of Social Work from Antioch University in 1981. In addition to being a loving mom, she was a pre-school teacher for five years and a social worker at Federation Day Care Services for more than 25 years. She was also a family therapist and group counselor. She devoted more than 10 years volunteering at The Gratz College Center for Holocaust Studies & Human Rights transcribing stories of survivors and hidden children.

She was an avid reader and voracious puzzler, loved to travel, sang in choirs around the world, enjoyed movies and was her happiest at family gatherings. Her matzo ball making with her granddaughters was legendary.

She is survived by her children, Jeffrey Cohen (Ellen Friedman), Susan Steinbrink (David) and Michael Cohen (Rebecca Fleischer) as well as six grandchildren: Hannah, Leah (Derek), Jenna, Annie, Eryn and Cayla.

The funeral service will take place at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Raphael-Sacks Funeral Home at 6410 N. The chapel service will be followed by a private burial for family. Shiva will be observed Sunday, December 17th and Monday, December 18th.
