Richard L. Mandel, 84, progressive educator who led Miquon and Friends Select Schools

Richard L. Mandel, of Philadelphia, a progressive educator who led The Miquon School and Friends Select School, died surrounded by family on Monday, October 5, 2026. He was 84.

An educator and lifelong learner, Richard believed children deserved to be taken seriously as individuals, encouraged to follow their curiosity, and given room to think for themselves. Those convictions shaped his leadership of two Philadelphia-area schools and his relationships with generations of students and teachers.

Richard was born on January 28, 1942, in New York City to Lucille Bauer Mandel and Henry S. Mandel. He grew up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side with his younger brother, Hank, and graduated from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in 1960. A classmate later remembered him as “the life of every party.”

At the University of Chicago, Richard met Alice Kelcey Norman (both class of 1964), his wife of more than 60 years. After attending Harvard Law School, he began his career in Baltimore, working to reform public schools, efforts he would continue in Philadelphia. Richard and Alice moved to Philadelphia’s Mount Airy neighborhood in 1971, where they lived for over 50 years.

From 1975 to 1984, Richard served as principal of The Miquon School, where he became a prominent voice for progressive, child-centered education. He championed an approach rooted in curiosity, independent thought, and respect for each child. From 1984 to 1991, he served as headmaster of Friends Select School, bringing those same commitments to a school community built on close teacher-student relationships.

Unafraid to reinvent himself, Richard took a two-year hiatus from education to pursue a lifelong interest in acting and focus on Jewish studies. A longtime active member of Germantown Jewish Centre, Richard became a bar mitzvah at 53. He later founded and led the Men’s Torah Study Group for 24 years, preparing deeply for its discussions and creating a place for learning, friendship, and connection. He also returned to education as a consultant to schools, work he continued until his retirement. In retirement, he turned to writing, working on a memoir of his early life.

Richard had a great sense of humor, loved conversation, and maintained friendships for decades. He enjoyed literature, musicals, movies, and the outdoors.

Above all, Richard loved and enjoyed his family. He is survived by his wife, Alice; his sons, Joshua (Amanda) and Gregory (Alyson); and his grandchildren, Evelyn, Isaac, Lucas, and Avery. He also leaves extended family, lifelong friends, and the many former students and educators whose lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026, at 12:00p at Germantown Jewish Centre, 400 W. Ellet Street, Philadelphia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Miquon School. https://www.miquon.org.  Alice remembers Richard's years there as his favorite job, and the school remains deeply significant to the entire Mandel family.
