Richard Sydney Gittis, 95 years, 6 months, and 2 days old, of Philadelphia, passed away in Huntingdon Valley, PA, on June 10, 2025.
Richard is survived by his wife, Marion, of 43 years. Children: Robert Gittis (Marci), Steven Gittis (Rhonda), Gary Gittis, Steven Rose, Aimee Stratton (Chris), Beth Rose. Grandchildren: Michael Stratton, Alek Gittis, Samuel Gittis, Natalie Gittis, Mei Lee Kwok, Phoebe Gittis, Ryan Stratton, Hanna Rose, Aidan Stratton, Benjamin Rose.
Richard was preceded in death by his Mother, Yvonne, his Father, Sam, and his Daughter, Mindi (Kwok).
After serving in the military in the Army during the Korean War, Richard graduated from Temple University with a degree in accounting. After working in the accounting field for 3 years, he went to work as a Philatelist and a Numismatist for Adelphia Stamp and Coin for 12 years. Richard then worked for the Franklin Mint for 3 years in sales. He then went to work for the Apfelbaum company for 9 years as an Appraiser and Buyer of stamp collections. In 1981, he bought Philly Stamp and Coin from his Uncle (Fernand Creed) and worked until 2008 buying, selling, and appraising stamps, coins, and collectibles.
During this time, Richard was an active member of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia and became a 32nd-degree Mason. Richard worked many volunteer events for both organizations as his way of giving back to the community.
Richard was an active bowler, enjoying the company of his bowling league buddies in Overbrook Park, PA. He enjoyed racquetball until his three sons could beat him.
Philadelphia sports were a passion of Richards's. He loved all Philadelphia teams and was blessed to see them all win championships during his lifetime. He also had a special place in his heart for Penn State Football.
Richard was that person who could walk into a room full of strangers and come out of the same room with new friends. He didn’t forget a name, and you never knew who he was going to meet in some random city.
Richard loved to travel and was able to go on many a tour with Marion. They loved to cruise and saw much of Europe.
Richard was always happy to see you and would be happy to talk your ear off!
A celebration of Richard’s 95 years of excellence will be held graveside at the Roosevelt Memorial Park, 2701 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose, PA 19053, at 2 PM on Sunday, June 15th.
The Gittis/Rose Family truly appreciates the love of Richard that has been shown. It means so much to the family, and for that we Thank You!
