BARVIN
PAULA RAE, died peacefully at her home in Elkins Park on Thursday, September 4, 2014 after a 2 year struggle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's) disease. She is survived by her husband Daniel Katzenberg; son David; as well as her sister Cynthia and her brother Mark and several nieces and nephews. Born on October 29, 1956 in Houston, TX, she was the youngest of the 4 children of the late Bob and Marcia (Rolnick) Barvin. After graduating from Barnard College with a B.A. in History, she began a long career as a fundraiser for environmental and consumer rights organizations. Paula was an active member of the community in Cheltenham Township. She served on the School Board for two and a half years before stepping down in June because of her illness. At home, Paula was an avid cook and gardener. Many of her dessert recipes were passed down from her mother and included her delicious mandel bread and Italian prune plum cake. She also loved tennis and the arts. Her older brother William Barvin died of ALS in 2000, and her neurologist believes it is likely there was a genetic link. In September 2013, Paula co-authored an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer health section about her battle with ALS entitled "My Life is Now." A Memorial Service is scheduled for Thursday, September 11 at 2 P.M. at Temple Keneseth Israel, 8339 Old York Road in Elkins Park. Donations in Paula's memory can be made to the ALS Hope Foundation, 1333 Race Street, Suite 201, P.O. Box 40777, Philadelphia, PA 19107. https://
