Norman J. Newman

NORMAN J. NEWMAN, of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on July 8, 2025 at the age of 90. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis (nee Stutman); loving father of Cory Newman, Jack Newman (Tracy), and Michelle Thornton (‘Mick’); and adoring grandfather of Lindsey, Wren (Luca), Brianna, Sydney, Shannon, Ethan, and Liam.

Norman is also survived by his dear sister, Joan Cohen, his adored cousin, Bobbie Goldstein, and his much-loved niece and nephews, Cheryl Anton, Andrew Rubin, and Scott Rubin.

Norman was a proud graduate of Central High School for Boys, Class of 1952 (class #198), and was also very proud of his service to his country in the United States Army. From the 1970s through the 1990s he then worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, first as an unemployment claims specialist, then in a position in which he aided veterans to re-enter the civilian workforce.

Norman was a man who enjoyed the simple things in life; watching the Philadelphia sports teams, listening to classical music, and reading the Sunday paper (from cover to cover) on Saturday nights. But most of all he was about his family. He always wanted to know everything about what they were doing, what accompaniments they were amassing, and where they might be going to next. Yes, he sometimes questioned choices that were being made, but in the end he was always nothing but supportive of his family. And most recently, his shell really broke, as the stoic British part of his demeanor fell away and he was able to regularly say ‘I love you’, and freely give hugs and kisses to those closest to him.

He will be greatly missed.
