Murray grew up in Strawberry Mansion and graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School in Philadelphia, in January 1959. He enlisted in the Army in March 1958, while a senior in high school, served 6 months active duty (Fort Knox KY; 315th Infantry Regiment) and 8 years in the reserves.
