MELVIN DION, ESQ. on November 23, 2025. Beloved husband for 69 years of Marlene (nee Futoransky); Loving father of Carol Listino (Jeffrey Krinsky), Gary Dion (Donna), Sharon Dion (Matthew Rose), and Nancy Margolis (James); Dear brother of Gloria Wager; Devoted grandfather of Jessica (Joe), Jamie, Allison, Joshua, Madeleine, Adrienne (Jake), Eric, Daniel, and Benjamin. Cherished uncle to Donald (Sherry), Philip, Adam, David and Susie. And as of January 15, 2026, dear great-grandfather to Sabrina Saige.
Mel was born in Brooklyn to Morris and Betty (Krigsman) Dion on January 30, 1935, and moved to Philadelphia as a young child. He attended Central High School and then Temple University for both undergraduate and law school. Mel founded his own trial law firm in 1959 and was a distinguished member of the Phila. Bar Assoc. for over 50 yrs. That firm continues to this day, serving all Philadelphians with integrity and compassion, through his son Gary Dion and grandson Joshua Dion.
Mel met Marlene at summer camp, where he worked as a waiter and she as a counselor. According to his sister, Gloria, Mel returned from camp and told her he had met the woman he planned to marry. And so, he did, on June 24, 1956. Marlene and Mel lived in Overbrook Park for their first years together and moved to Wynnewood in 1966, where they raised their kids and built a life based on love, mutual respect, and shared interests. They filled the years with wonderful friends and joyful activities: they were patrons of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Opera; lovers of theater, art, travel, and fine dining; active community members at Temple Beth Hillel/Beth El and other organizations. They spent many wonderful years together in Ventnor New Jersey and Boca Raton Florida. Mel and Marlene were just months away from celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary when he passed.
Mel’s family of six, then 10, and eventually 22, was his greatest pastime. His world was centered on providing for those he loved, giving generously of his time and affection. If a loved one mentioned something in passing that was on their mind, it would be on his mind too. He had a knack for making each of his children and grandchildren feel like they were his favorite. He was the first to call on a birthday and the last to leave any gathering. No favor was too big or too small if it would help his family.
Mel was organized, methodical, meticulous, thoughtful. His sense of style, whether in fashion, art, or furniture, was impeccable. He had a great sense of humor but was also a sensitive guy - movies and even commercials would bring him to tears. He had a gentle and reserved nature - always thinking before speaking, which meant that his words carried weight – he meant what he said, and he followed through immediately on any commitment he made.
Mel was loved and cherished by so many -- their bedrock, their “due north”, their “person”. Mel’s generosity, work-ethic, integrity, devotion to family, and sense of fairness and humility will be his legacy - carried on by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mel truly was a blessing to all whose life he touched.
