DISCHELL/MYERS
MARY
Our mother and grandmother, Mary was born in 1916 before Women's Suffrage. A political person and activist all her life, last year she proudly cast her presidential ballot for the victor of the popular vote. Mary died on June 30, 2017.
She grew up in poverty. Too poor to attend college she taught herself literature, history and her first intellecutal love, art. Mary became a successful artist. Her work was exhibited and sold in many galleries. She did this while raising two children and being a partner to Al in a long and happy marriage.
She was resolute and clear eyed. No one was spared a strong rebuke from her when showing foolishness or intolerance. Mary would inspire many artists and writers to achieve their goals.
Coming home from school was always an adventure. There she'd be with her friends animatedly discussing/arguing the evils of the Republicans, art, philosophy and challenging one and all on his or her perceived intellectual misstep.
She was a woman of letters in more ways than one. She corresponded with so many people and managed to keep up with all. She would embellish her cards and letters with illustrations that made them keepsakes.
Mary read prodigiously and could regale you with quotes, plots, and points from Sophocles to Raymond Chandler. Woe to us if she thought we were reading her definition of trash. It was always "You should read instead this book by..."
Most of all she was loving to all of us and to her friends. We are her proud family: Her late husband Alvin; Mark, Cheryl, Jackie (Momo Araki) and Julie Dischell; Stuart, Caroline and Adam Dischell; and many illustrious nephews, nieces and cousins. A great lady who inspired us to flourish. Arrangements to be private as Mary wished.
