Marvin Joseph Hurwitz passed away on December 6, 2020, from complications of COVID-pneumonia. He was 96 years old.
Marvin considered himself to have led a charmed life. He was devoted to Grace, his wife of 69 years. Together they raised three daughters, Wendy (Allan Strawhacker), Jill, and Beth (Sam Vecchione) and he is survived in addition by four grandchildren, Amanda Strawhacker (Jeff Soyster), Rachel, Daniel, and Jenny Vecchione and two great-grandchildren, June and Henry Soyster.
Marvin was born on May 29, 1924 to Isadore and Lena Hurwitz in Brooklyn, New York. He was a star student who graduated Magna Cum Laude from CCNY and, after a stint in the army, went to Columbia University for a Doctorate in Organic Chemistry.
Marvin’s professional career was spent in the Philadelphia area, working for the Rohm & Haas Company. He remained with the company for the next thirty-five years, finally retiring at the pinnacle of his career as Director of Pioneering Research.
After retirement, Marvin did pro bono work for the International Executive Service Corps, to aid developing countries in using modern technology including spending three months abroad every year, for example in Brazil (Rio), Thailand (Bangkok), and. Morocco (Casablanca).
Marvin was an avid opera lover and, together with Grace who was a gifted pianist, always filled their home with music.
Devoted family, loving marriage, useful professional work——this was a life well-lived and well-loved.
