Marvin S., age 97 ½, peacefully passed away at home with his wife, Mollie, of over 74 years by his side. Besides being the beloved husband of Mollie (nee Cohen), he was a loving father to Larry Berman (Randie), Ken Berman, and Mitchell Berman (Chaya). Adoring grandfather of Jason (Brittany), Scott (Lucy), Neal, Brian, and Jennifer, and great-grandfather of Charlie Rose. Dear brother of Arnold Berman.
Marvin grew up in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia. As a youngster he loved horse-back riding in Fairmount Park, and he attended overnight camp for many years at Camp Akiba in the Poconos. He graduated from Overbrook High School, was a Bar Mitzvah at the original Har Zion Temple in Wynnefield and attended about three years of college at Temple prior to joining his father’s office supply business. He expanded the office supply business to include selling office furniture. He developed an import business of office chairs from Japan and traveled there to negotiate his deals for the imports.
He was a Veteran having served in the Navy during World War II. He met the love of his life, Mollie, in 1949 and they married in 1950. He and Mollie retired from Philadelphia to Sarasota Florida in 1992. They would then move to Addison Reserve in Delray Beach, FL in 2014.
Marvin always kept himself busy with many interests and hobbies. He liked to keep fit, having been a member of the old Broadwood fitness club on North Broad Street for years and thereafter at the YMHA. There he loved to swim, exercise, sauna, etc.
He self-taught himself many things including how to play golf, tennis and bridge, and in later years, he took up painting. Many of his paintings were of his family and the hobbies he enjoyed. He liked to say that he never had lessons for most of what he did.
His other hobbies included playing chess with his sons and grandchildren, owning a small speed boat that he used to go fishing with and even learning to water ski with it, being an amateur photographer who developed his own photos in a dark room, raising several dogs, having a side business of raising tropical fish and outfitting aquariums for clients in offices, and having an interest in cars, particularly his red Corvette that he kept for 20 years.
He was also handy, having finished the raw space of the basement in his house in Penn Valley into usable family room space, and building a stone outdoor barbecue at the house, among other things.
He also liked to travel having visited Israel, Japan, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Alaska, the Grand Canyon and Canada among other locations.
Family and friends are invited to his Graveside Service on Sunday, February 16, 2025, 1 PM precisely, at Mt. Sharon Cemetery in Springfield PA (Section W)
