Martin "Marty" Applebaum

Martin “Marty” Applebaum, passed away on March 19, 2025. He was born on June 17, 1960, to Frank and Phyllis (nee Feldman) Applebaum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Marty first met his wife, Cheryl, at a volleyball game, but she left before he could ask for her phone number. A few months later, they crossed paths again at a Jewish dance. Determined not to miss his chance, Marty made sure to get her number, and their first date was a tubing trip down the Delaware River.

A chemical engineer turned high school science teacher with the Philadelphia School District, Marty had an unwavering passion for education and mentorship. He would often preview his classroom demonstrations at home, launching rockets and creating explosions in the backyard.

Marty was a gifted handyman who found immense joy in fixing things for family, friends, and neighbors. He was an avid motorcyclist, film photographer, and SCUBA diver. He coached chess, built model airplanes, an even installed a zipline in his basement. He loved to travel and took his children on an unforgettable eight-week cross country camping trip. He loved music and was a barbecue expert. Marty’s kindness, ingenuity, sense of humor, and adventurous spirit will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl (nee Wolf) Applebaum, his two amazing children Dr. Jessica (Patrick Foran) Applebaum and Dr. Jeremy Applebaum. Devoted brother of Ruth (Jules) Mermelstein, Dr. Steve (Candice) Applebaum and Marcia (Paul) Friend. Loving son-in-law of Rochelle Wolf and the late Robert “Bob” Wolf. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends, and dogs.
