Obituary

Marlene S. Farber Lipschutz, 91, crossed over the rainbow in the early morning hours of May 8, 2026. She was the wife of the late Bernard Lipschutz, mother of David, Steven, and Ruth. Grandmother of Michael (Lauren), and Laura Lipschutz. An acclaimed artist, she studied at the Tyler School of Art and learned from Howard Watson. She had also been the Sisterhood President at Old York Road Temple-Beth Am. Whoever knew Marlene was instantly drawn to her and her smile that lit up the room. She had many dear friends over the years and will be missed by all.

    3. Brother- Jack Farber
    4. Sister- Carole Farber Shames Frank (still living)

  • Childhood
    1. Grew up on Roosevelt Boulevard in Philadelphia.
    2. Lived with mother, father, brother, sister, uncle and grandmother.
    3. When she was 9 years old, her future husband Bernard/Bernie was in Belgium fighting in WWII.
    4. Attended Olney High School, class of 1952.
    5. Liked to play tennis.

  • Early adulthood
    1. Her uncle that she had lived with fixed her up on a date with Bernie who worked with her uncle.
    2. Marlene and Bernie were married on a very snowy night in December 24,1953 when she was 19 years old. For their honeymoon, they drove from Philadelphia to Miami and then flew to Havana, Cuba. In 2024, Marlene and Bernie saw a YouTube video of Havana and had vivid recollections of the city and their time there.
    3. Marlene and Bernie bought their first house in Mount Airy, Philadelphia. There they raised their three children- David, Steven and Ruth- until 1966. Mount Airy was a tight knit community where they met and made friends that lasted a lifetime. In fact, Marlene’s children still remain friends with some of the Mount Airy friends’ children.
    4. Early vacations with David, Steven and Ruth included trips to Miami, Florida and Canada.

  • Adulthood
    1. Marlene and Bernie moved to Dresher in 1966, providing a bigger house and better schooling for their children.
    2. Marlene was a homemaker raising three rambunctious children. When the children were older, she took a job as a bookkeeper at Jonny Mott’s restaurant and baked their signature chocolate dessert cake for them.
    3. Marlene was the Sisterhood President at Old York Rd Temple Beth-Am Synagogue in 1972 (at the same time that Bernie was the Treasurer).
    4. Marlene and Bernie enjoyed annual vacations together, including trips to Isreal, Canada, Mexico and ocean cruises.
    5. All throughout her life, Marlene most enjoyed being an artist, working in oil paints and watercolors. She made well over 100 paintings. Marlene won several awards for her paintings. Two of them were hung at the Montgomery County Pennsylvania Bar Association offices and on the first floor of Jefferson Einstein Montgomery Hospital.

  • Later Adulthood
    1. Marlene gained immense pleasure from her grandchildren Michael and Laura and was very proud of them.
    2. She provided loving care and companionship to Bernie all throughout his life, and especially at the end of his life.
    3. In the last two years of her life Marlene suffered from dementia which increasingly became worse. However, her bright, engaging smile enriched the lives of her assisted living resident neighbors and caregivers. One of her biggest joys was speaking her limited Yiddish with fellow residents and guests. It seemed to bring her back to her youth when her grandmother spoke to her in Yiddish.
    4. Marlene died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning of Friday May 8, 2026.
