Libby Schwartz

May 26, 1942 — December 12, 2023

Libby Malka Schwartz, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.

Libby was born on May 26, 1942, in Philadelphia to the late Roslyn and Herman Schwartz. Growing up in East Oak Lane with her sister Temmy and brother Gilbert, Libby developed a deep connection with her roots and strong relationships with family, friends, and the Jewish community.

A distinguished scholar, Libby graduated from the University of California, Berkeley during the 1960s, a time and place known for nurturing progressive thinkers.  It was here that Libby's liberal and unconventional nature found a home, laying the foundation for her lifetime of charity, educational pursuits, and a commitment to social activism. Libby took pride in playing an active role in organizing and participating in protests, and traveling far and wide to support causes close to her heart.

Libby majored in psychology and became a dedicated English teacher in The School District of Philadelphia. She devoted almost 40 years to educating, enlightening, and encouraging students. After her retirement, Libby continued contributing to the school system through substitute teaching and volunteering for many different organizations. She was also a leader in efforts by the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers to improve teacher and staff working conditions.

A mighty pillar of the Jewish community, Libby was actively involved at numerous synagogues, attending holiday and social events, dancing, singing, and leading daily minyans. She promoted Jewish causes through generous contributions to shuls, educational institutions, and scholarship funds.

As she explored the world, she delighted in immersing herself in diverse cultures and forming connections with people from all walks of life. Libby's open hearted, free-spirited nature and generosity touched countless lives.  Her positive energy, infectious laughter, and bright smile will always be an inspiration to all who knew her. May her memory be for blessing.

Libby Schwartz is remembered as the loving mother of Jacob, who left this world much too soon. Libby is survived by her sister Temmy (Alan), brother Gilbert (Bonnie), cousin Danelle (Ray), and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and other cousins.
