Obituary

Lester Broad, most recently of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026. He was 94 years old.

Born in Philadelphia on March 6, 1932, to Morris and Bella Broad, Lester was the first natural-born US citizen in his family, who had previously immigrated from Lublin, Poland. His youth was spent primarily in West Philadelphia, living alongside his parents and five cherished siblings – Fay, Frank, Carl, Jack, and Bernie. Following his graduation from West Philadelphia High School, Lester attended Temple University while a member of the US Army reserve, then completed his active duty service at South Carolina’s Fort Jackson. He subsequently built a career as an educator, working at the Philadelphia House of Correction and then for decades as an English teacher at Philadelphia’s discipline-focused Shallcross High School. His retirement years were filled with trips around the world, quality time with family, and countless theater and movie dates with his beloved Sandy.

Lester was a man of voracious appetites – for knowledge, experiences, and of course a good meal (and dessert). He loved Philly sports, trivia competitions, and a well-planned itinerary. He set a high standard for his children and grandchildren, and he was thrilled to witness their many achievements. Lester prided himself on his toughness, fought until the end, but can now rest easy following a life well lived.

Lester is survived by his wife Sandy Broad. He was preceded in death by his late wife Myrna Broad. He is also survived by his children Spencer (Amelia), Cheryl (Mike), and Beth (Darren) McGovern; sisters-in-law Peggy Broad, Rita Broad, and Phyllis Rosoff; grandchildren Matthew, Garrett (Jane), Reece (Maddie), Ashton (Cassidy), Amelia, and Olivia; and his first great-grandchild Adeline. He will be fondly remembered by his daughter-in-law Mindy (Steve); step-children Sharon (Mick) and Gwyn (Rich); and step-grandchildren Ryan, Josh, Chad, Chelsea (Felipe), Jake, and Jenna; as well as many other friends and family.

Family and friends are invited to Funeral Services on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 11:30 AM, to be held at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Suburban North, 310 2nd Street Pike, Southampton, PA 18966. Interment Montefiore Cemetery. Shiva will follow immediately thereafter and on Thursday from 3:00-8:00 PM at the home of Beth and Darren McGovern. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
