Leonard G. Swartz left this Earth after 91 years of life, on February 17th 2022, with the loving support of his sister Phyllis, daughter Deb, nephew Gary and son-in-law Steve by his side. Len was a devoted husband to his wife Sandra (deceased) for 53 years; a loving father to his children: Diane Fleischman, Jeff Swartz (deceased) daughter-in-law Terry Swartz, and Debbie Cowan and son-in-law Steve Cowan; an adoring grandfather to his grandchildren: Natalie Fleischman, Rachel Swartz Khazri, Jeremy Swartz, Ben Cowan, Chloe Cowan, Mitchell Swartz, and Penny Swartz; an eternal Big Brother to Phyllis Lustig, and revered as the most fun loving Uncle to his nephews, Steve, Gary and Brian Lustig.
Len was born in Schenectady, New York. He maintained his residency in New York for the majority of his young adult life. After attending Berkshire Preparatory in Massachusetts, Len enrolled in Colgate University. He loved his time at Colgate and was a loyal alumni and consummate adoring fan of the Red Raiders, Colgate's football team. Professionally, Len pridefully had two occupations: One with the USAF and one with the US Federal Government. In his early 20's he enrolled in the US Air Force ROTC and ultimately retired with rank as Lieutenant Colonel. He loved his time with the USAF, the travel it offered, and his monthly commitments at McGuire AFB. Professionally, he worked with the US Federal Government. While raising his young family with Sandy this often resulted in frequent relocations. After several moves from Albany NY, Winston Salem NC, Cleveland OH, he settled his family to Dresher PA where he resided up until his death. While in Philadelphia, Len worked in the Department of Health and Human Service and then in the Office of Civil Rights as a Lead Investigator and retired at the age of 73.
Throughout his life, Len was constantly engaged in numerous hobbies and interests. He loved music and took to playing both alto saxophone and the clarinet in high school and throughout his college years. He loved big band music and even dusted off the alto saxophone a year ago and started playing with weekly lessons at the age of 90. He was an avid coin collector, loved public speaking and became an active member of Toastmasters, (an organization committed to communication and leadership and public speaking). He loved staying active and was a dedicated walker, (be it outside or in the mall) and preached the gospel of a healthy lifestyle, that which he learned while on Weight Watchers. He embraced the message of WW and soon became a spokesman for the organization even past retirement and into his 70's and early 80's. He took up singing with the choir at Keneseth Israel in 2014, and even in his mid 80's attended classes to learn how to obtain 'Voice Over' jobs.
Beyond living a life with persistence and passion, Len will be remembered most for his unbelievable positive attitude, humility, sense of humor, friendly demeanor, love of family, and profound devotion and care for the love of his life, Sandy. Never one to talk about himself, he always took a keen and genuine interest in others. He was an incredibly personable and likable man, which he credited his parents, particularly his father Raymond, whom he adored. Len will be greatly missed.
