Leonard “Lenny” Somers (Laible Avraham ben Asher), beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on his birthday that this year fell on the holiday Tu B’Shevat.
Lenny leaves behind his devoted wife of 56 years, Toby, his children Steven (Nanci), Craig, Ira (Lauren), and Stephanie, 13 cherished grandchildren—Jennifer (Clay), Tyler (Allison), Haileyrose, Corey, Nicole (Nick), Harper, Moshe, Riva, Asher, Yoel (who shared a birthday with Lenny), Uriel, Ezra, and Henny—as well as two adored great-grandchildren, Sawyer and newborn Tucker (born on Lenny’s birthday).
A master diamond setter on Philadelphia’s historic Jewelers’ Row for 49 years, Lenny was admired not only for his craftsmanship but also for his honesty, precision, and quiet pride in a job well done. His skilled hands helped create beauty that will live on through generations.
Lenny was a lifelong fan of his hometown teams—the Phillies and Eagles—though he was just as passionate about loudly “coaching” from his favorite spot on the floor as he was about cheering their victories.
What Lenny loved most, though, was his family. He had a playful spirit and endless patience for games, whether playing chess, ball or having a catch with his sons and later grandsons. In chess, and any board game for that matter, Lenny followed in his father’s tradition, believing kids needed to learn how to lose as well as to win. So, Lenny taught them to play their best.
He was known for his warmth, humor and unfiltered, plain‑spoken remarks, which friends and family accepted with a smile because they knew he meant no harm.
