With great sadness, we share the peaceful passing of Leonard “Len” E. Portnoy on January 6, 2025.
Len was the devoted son of Samuel and Goldie (Morrison) Portnoy and the loving younger brother of Donald Portnoy. Raised in South Philadelphia, he graduated from Southern High School. From a young age, Len loved classical music and played several instruments, once considering a career in music. He later joined his parents in the family business, a five-and-ten store in South Philadelphia, eventually taking it over and later opening a baby furniture business in Northeast Philadelphia.
Len proudly served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant. In 1960, a blind date changed his life when he met his soulmate, Wendy (Needleman). They married in February 1961, spent time in Arkansas during Len’s military service, and then returned to Northeast Philadelphia, where they welcomed their sons, Bruce (1963) and Alan (1966).
Len was a devoted, hardworking, and deeply loving man who gave his whole heart to his family. After selling his business, he enjoyed several years selling cars before retiring. Len and Wendy cherished life’s simple joys—dinners out, new adventures together, and time with family.
Len was predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Wendy, and their son, Bruce. He is survived by his son, Alan; his daughter-in-law, Kathy (Odorow) Portnoy; his brother Donald Portnoy, sister-in-law Karen; and his granddaughters, Beth and Melissa.
Relatives and friends are invited to funeral services on Friday, January 9, at 1:00 PM precisely at Roosevelt Memorial Park, 2701 Old Lincoln Highway, Trevose, PA 19053. Following the service, family and friends are welcome to return to the late residence of Wendy and Leonard Portnoy.
Contributions in Len’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
