It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Toff, who died peacefully at the age of 65. Karen was a trailblazer who changed the way the world sees people with Down Syndrome.
Karen was known for her warmth and sociability, her cheerfulness and optimism. She was a talented artist who found joy and purpose in creative expression as a participant at the Center for Creative Works. Karen was an exuberant fan of The Anna Crusis Feminist Choir.
Proud of her independence, Karen lived for many years in a shared apartment in Narberth. She enjoyed volunteering at Bryn Mawr Hospital, the Bala Library, and Saunders Nursing Home. For the past 16 years Karen lived at a JEVS group home with caring room mates and staff.
Karen contributed to the book Adults with Down Syndrome, she wrote: “You may wonder what it’s like to be a person with Down Syndrome. My name is Karen Toff. Truthfully, I’m just like everyone else. I have the same feelings and emotions like everybody. Also I can learn, it might take me a little longer, but I really can learn. I live a full life surrounded by my loving family and caring friends.”
Her life was a testament to love, empathy, and inclusion. Those who knew her were forever changed by her example of kindness, patience, and strength.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Camp PALS, a summer program for individuals with Down syndrome that was created as a direct result of Karen’s inspiration, and continues to be a legacy of love, inclusion, and service to others: http://palsprograms.org/karen or to Center for Creative Works, 241 Lancaster Ave, Wynnewood, PA 19096, https://www.centerforcreativeworks.org/donate
