Karen Gaye Abrams

Karen Gaye Abrams (nee Korkala) passed away October 16, 2026, after a truly heroic fight against pulmonary embolisms, heart stoppage, breathing issues, infection and multiple organ failure. She was a gentle soul, but (clearly) a strong one. Karen was the beloved wife of Harris Abrams, very proud mother of Ken Gregory and Robin Nakonetschny (Tony), much-loved sister of Gary Korkala, and doting grandmother of Jaden and Alexa Nakonetschny.

After spending some time in the business world, Karen found her true calling: caring for children. She was proud of founding and operating a state-licensed daycare center for ten years before going on to provide childcare privately, including a stint working for Leon Redbone. Karen enjoyed working with children so much that she kept working until she was 72 years old and if it hadn't been for Covid she probably would have kept going even then.

Karen loved concerts and plays, museums and tours, Revolutionary War reenacting and community theater, but her happiest moments were the quieter ones -- those spent with her family and friends, or just curled up with her beloved pets (Tigger and Louis) and enjoying an old movie or a new book. She loved new experiences but was a proudly old fashioned person whose loss will be felt by those who loved her for a very long time.
