Judith Shapiro (nee Manis)
Judie Shapiro passed away peacefully on October 31, 2025. She was born in 1936 in Philadelphia and raised her family in Havertown, PA. She and her husband Ray moved to Philadelphia after the children departed. She became a resident of Boynton Beach, Florida and vacationed in the summer in Margate, NJ. She is survived by her husband Ray, children Joel (Carrie), Todd (Donna) and Lisa (Joshua), by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and her sister Myra Prusky.
Judie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. The family added great joy to her life. Early on she demonstrated a dedication to give something back to the community and the less fortunate. Ultimately, she focused on the local needs of the Jewish community and the State of Israel. She harnessed her energy and financial resources to make a difference in that endeavor. Judie was a Trustee of the Jewish Federation, a board member of the Jewish Publishing Group (publishers of the Jewish Exponent) and a board member of the Jewish Community Centers. She was active in the Women’s Division of the Federation and became a Daughter of Rachael. She also participated in several Missions to Israel.
After the children left the nest she became a travel agent, first at Bartlett Travel and then at Rosenbluth Travel. To this day, people tell family members they miss the days when Judie booked their trips as no one could cobble together an exciting itinerary like her. She committed to always being a student and to never stop learning. Judie was never without a book. Art lectures, play readings, book clubs, theater, film lectures and independent films were always on the calendar. Travel took her to forty countries. It was a joyful life’s journey.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on November 4, 2025 at the Chapel of Peace located at Laurel Hill West Cemetery, 225 Belmont Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA. For those unable to attend in person, services will be streamed via zoom by clicking here. Donations in her memory can be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, or a charity of your choice.
