JUDITH BERMAN

BERMAN

JUDITH, 78, Mother, Grandmother, Philanthropist. Beloved mother, wife, grand-mother, and philanthropist, died Tuesday, October 16, 2012.
Having grown up in Atlantic City, Judith married her soul mate, Gerald Berman, in 1955 and the two were the consummate partners until Gerald's death in 1998. The couple shared the joy of raising five boys in Merion Park, the neighborhood through which Judith enjoyed daily long walks. Judith was the most caring mother and supported her boys unconditionally. She exuded her warmth to all of those she touched until the day she passed.
In 1967, along with her husband, Gerald, Judith founded the Jeff Fund, which was the first research organization focused exclusively on pediatric inflammatory bowel disease in the world. The fund was named for their second son, Jeffrey; Judith's children and grandchildren continue to actively support the cause today through The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America honored Judith as Woman of the Year in 2003 for her commitment to the cause. Judith also received the Chapel of Four Chaplains Honor Award in 1982, given in recognition of her service to all people regardless of race or faith.
Judith found a friend in each soul she met - strangers were magically drawn to her welcoming smile and Judith treated each new friend with the utmost respect and kindness. We find comfort in knowing that she passed on the same exact day that her beloved husband passed 14 years earlier and that she is finally reunited with her soul mate. We will remember her for her beautiful smile, her dedication to her family, and her love for ice cream and slivers of cake.
She is survived by her sons James (Randi), Jeffrey, John (Pamela), Anthony, and Thomas (Michele); and her 14 grand-children Peter, Jenna, Jill, Colby, Logan, Alexa, Gerald, Kylie, Matthew, Danielle, Jordyn, Devyn, Blake, and Evan.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:30 A.M. at Temple Adath Israel, Old Lancaster Rd. and Highland Ave., Merion. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park in Trevose. The family will then return to the residence of Jeffrey Berman in Penn Valley, where they will sit shiva on Thursday.
Contributions in Judith's memory are suggested to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, 150 Monument Rd. #402, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004.
