Joseph "Joe" S. Finston, local bridge and subway builder, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on September 14, 2019. Joe was a graduate of Central High in 1944 and University of Pennsylvania and Moore College of Engineering in 1950 after WW II service in the Navy. Employed by and subsequently becoming President of Kaufman construction company, he worked all hours but often said that he "never worked a day in [his] life". He had such joy in creating new structures. Under his leadership, Kaufman built the Betsy Ross bridge, the Conshohocken Bridge, the 1980 rehab of the Phila. Commuter Rail connection, parts of the Market Street subway and the 1979 Baltimore section of I-95, among many other projects. Joe had many ardent interests, including hiking national parks, conservation (especially American Chestnut trees), skiing, Jewish life/causes, socializing with others and attending the theatre and orchestral events. He instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of nature and conservation, a high value for education, and the courage to take the job that is engaging, rather than the one most easy or lucrative. He will be very much missed by his wife of 45 years, Arlene Renee; his children Shara, Lane (Jill) and Felicia (Paul); and grandchildren Eli and Aden; also niece and nephew Fred and Nancy. Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral services Friday 11 A.M. precisely at GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS, 6410 N. BROAD ST., PHILA. Int. Mt. Sharon. Cem. Shiva will be observed at his late residence. Contributions in his memory may be made to Cong. Or Ami, 708 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444, www.or-ami.org. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 P.M. on Sunday, November 17 at Cong. Or Ami.
