JOEL OLDER

December 16, 1934 — May 22, 2019

Hainesport - Joel Barry Older, 84, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at Virtua Voorhees Hospital following complications related to pneumonia.

He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Green and Heather "Happy" Older; loving sister Alisa Older; Son in law Mitch Green; granddaughters Sammi, Sarah and Emma Green; and many close friends.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, to Eugene and Fannie (Paul) Older, he eventually settled and lived for most of his life in South Jersey.

After attending Temple University on a full artistic scholarship, Joel served in the United States Armed Forces Army Division where he was honorably discharged and remained a respected Vet for the duration of his life. Additionally, he was a proud Freemason. Upon discharge, Joel went on to manage a local light weight boxing champion which lead to a prize fight at Madison Square Garden.

In his early years, Joel sold lemons on the streets of Philly for his grandfather. This led to his budding entrepreneurial spirit. He soon owned numerous businesses from laundromats to neighborhood sandwich shops. This lead to his first breakout business in the food industry - an ice cream shop "Bressler's 33 Flavors" at Plymouth Meeting Mall. After that he went on to open the celebrated "Whistle Stop" and "Whistle Stop Deli" in Center City, PA, that landed him his trademarked "Ham-N-Eggel." The sandwich that soon became part of Philadelphia lore. Joel remained a successful Deli Man with numerous delicatessens and restaurants in Center City Philadelphia and Lower Bucks County.

He married Judith Rose Von Dirschberger in July, 20th 1969, the date of the first moon landing.
It was one small step for Joel and Judy, one giant leap for their three children Lisa, Aaron and Happy. Their thirty-five year marriage resulted in many happy memories at their Appaloosa horse farm, Redlo Run, in rural South Jersey.

Joel loved jazz music, was an avid antique collector who enjoyed attending Broadway shows in NYC and spending quality time at the family beach house down the shore on LBI. He remained a dyed in the wool Philadelphia sports fan his entire life. Thank you Eagles! He will be remembered as a kind, gentle man with a great sense of humor and a joyous, creative spirit.

Services will be held on Sunday, May 26th at 9am at Goldstein's Rosenberg's Raphael-Sacks located at 310 2nd Street Pike, Southampton, PA. Interment at King David Memorial Park in Bensalem will follow. Shiva will be observed beginning at 1pm at the home of Lisa and Mitch Green at 525 Justice Drive, Marlton NJ 08053
