COHEN
JOAN B. (nee Friedman), Dec. 1, 2009. Beloved wife for 54 years of Ralph D. Cohen, devoted mother of David (JoAnn Jablon), Beth, and Amy Cohen (Jamie Burks), grand-mother of Peter, Gabriel, Noah, Jonah and Sophie. She resided in Shannondell, and previously in Plymouth Meeting for 43 years. A Philadelphia native, Joan graduated from Temple University in 1954, and was an editor of Temple News and president of the ADA Chapter.
Upon graduation, Joan was a columnist and editor for the Jewish Exponent. A highlight of her career was a one on one interview with Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt. She left the Jewish Exponent to raise her family, and when her children were grown founded The Newmarket Agency, an advertising and public relations firm. Joan worked for many volunteer organizations over the years. A former board member of the American Heart Association, Joan chaired the annual Heart Ball in 1992. She was a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Classical Symphony, the Humane Society and NOW. Joan was an accomplished pianist, and organized a weekly sing-along for residents of The Meadows, a rehab facility at Shannondell.
Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday Dec. 4, 2009 at
GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL SACKS, 6410 N. Broad St. A gathering of remembrance will be held at Shannondell from 2 - 4 P.M. on Friday. Shiva will be observed Saturday 7 to 9 P.M. and Sunday 1 to 5 P.M. at the residence of Amy Cohen and Jamie Burks. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Philabundance or a charity of your choice.
