BRANDEIS JOAN (nee OPPENHEIMER) Of Elkins Park, age 82, died Monday, November 22, 2021 following complications from surgery. She was born in Mount Vernon, NY, November 23, 1938 and moved to Philadelphia as a child with her parents Eleanor and Lester Oppenheimer. She graduated from Abington Friends and attended Smith College. Joan and her then husband Bill Brandeis settled in Elkins Park where she co-founded Chapter & Verse, an independent bookstore. She attended Villanova University School of Law and was elected to the Order of the Coif. She first practiced at Bethlehem Steel and later Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis, LLP. She had many interests throughout her life, most notably bridge and gardening. Nothing brought Joan more joy than a raucous game of Monopoly with her grandchildren or teaching them the finer points of poker in a penny-ante game. Joan O. Brandeis is survived by her daughter Sally B. Kramer (Howard) of Cleveland Heights, OH, son Daniel Brandeis (Jennifer) of Pittsburgh, PA, grandchildren Benjamin, Samuel, William, Sophie, Eleanor and Jacob. Additional survivors include Dennis O'Brien, Dodie Tomkin, Alex Tomkinand many dear friends. A celebration in her honor will occur at Congregation Rodeph Shalom, 615 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19123 at 1:15 P.M. on Sunday December 19, 2021. Masks and Vaccinations are required. Memorial donations can be made to the Mitzvah Food Program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, Planned Parenthood or the charity of your choice.
