IRENE (nee Polya)
May 29, 2017, age 98, loving wife of the late Joseph. She was predeceased by her beloved parents Sarah and Rudolph Polya and brother Joseph L. Polya. Irene was a resident of the Madlyn and Leonard Abramson Center for Jewish Life since 2008. In 2004, the Center honored her, at its Auxiliary's annual tribute luncheon, for over 35 yrs. of volunteer services dating back to when she joined the Auxiliary at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center (PAG) on the Abramson Center's former Philadelphia campus. Her volunteerism and involvement with the Auxiliary had con-tinued until 2006, focusing in latter years on the Center's library. In 2015, Irene was once again honored by the Abramson Center Auxiliary with their first Woman of the Year award. Irene established 2 separate endowments at the Center: a Resident Luncheon Endowment Fund and am Enhanced Visit-ation Endowment Fund. She also endowed the Joseph L. Polya Memorial Scholarship at Abington High School in mem-ory of her beloved brother. However, Irene's continual volunteer work began with the USO during World War II. Beginning in 1975, as a part of a Volunteer Research Group, she was an integral part of the York House South medical team where she handled medical and lab appointments 2 days each week for approximately 18 yrs. Also, under the auspices of the Social Services department, Irene worked with York House tenants and with residents in the Nursing Home. In past years, Irene had been a devoted and active member of Beth Judah Synagogue in Logan and subsequently, Melrose B'nai Israel Emanuel-El in Chelten-ham. Irene is survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, June 1 at 1 P.M. at GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL SACKS SUBURBAN NORTH, 310 Second St. Pike, Southampton. Int. Roosevelt Memorial Park. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Madlyn and Leonard Abram-son Center for Jewish Life, 1425 Horsham Rd., North Wales, PA 19454 or a charity of donor's choices.
