RUDNICK
DR. HERMAN D.

Psychiatrist, Centenarian
1918-2018

Dr. Herman D. Rudnick passed away peacefully on August 19 at his Rydal Park home, surrounded by his loving wife Lois and close family. A life-long Philadelphian, Herman Rudnick was a Psychiatrist, proud Veteran of WWII and vocal advocate for patients' rights. Rudnick was born June 17, 1918 in Philadelphia. His father, David was a tailor and furrier in the Frankford neighborhood. His mother, Bessie, was a homemaker. Rudnick attended Frankford High School and then the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1939. He graduated Hahnemann Medical College in 1943. Medical Residencies and training included Columbia University Hospital, NY Psychiatric Hospital, Institute of The Pennsylvania Hospital, and Friends Hospital. From 1944-47 he served in the United States Army Medical Corps (Rank: Major), as Chief of Neuropsychiatry at the Army and Navy General Hospital, Hot Springs, Arkansas. Helping to heal WWII soldiers and veterans was a turning point in his life as a young physician.
After the war, Rudnick returned to Philadelphia, established a private practice in Psychiatry, seeing patients in his northeast Philadelphia office. While in practice, he served as President of the Medical Staff and sat on the Board of the Philadelphia Psychiatric Center. Rudnick was named a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Life Fellow of the Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Psychiatric Societies. Dr. Rudnick also taught classes in patient/doctor interaction at the PA College of Podiatric Medicine and lectured students in social work programs at local colleges. He also enjoyed guest-lecturing aboard the QE2 Trans Atlantic crossings throughout the 1970's. Dr. Rudnick left private practice at age 80 and next worked as a Physician Advisor for Magellan Behavioral Health and Focus Behavioral Health, retiring at age 90. In addition to Psychiatry, he pursued his passions for golf, traveling the world with Lois, and being a grandfather. Dr. Rudnick was a devoted congregant of Adath Zion and later the Keneseth Israel congregation. His extremely-outgoing personality can be summed up by his oft-spoken reminder that: "Everybody's a Somebody."
Beloved Husband of Lois (nee Kesler) and the late Florence "Bebe" (nee Schwartz): loving Father of Dr. Michael Rudnick, Jeffrey Rudnick, Judy Rudnick Domenici, Margie Gorman (Scott) and Jim Segal; devoted Grandfather of Suzanne (Patrick), Leah (Jared), Dan, Lizzi, Sam and Jennifer; adoring Great-Grandfather of Sadie and Arden.
