Herbert Ellis Siegel

Herbert Ellis Siegel died on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. Happy Herbie, lived a long and eventful life filled with family, friends and great adventure. He grew up in his beloved West Philadelphia and achieved renown as both the head of the Harrity Elementary School safety patrol and the all-city Duncan Yo-Yo champion. Herb joined the army and met his wife, Inge when he was stationed in the Kaiserslautern, Germany army base. After wooing both her and her family, Inge agreed to marry him and move back to Philly to raise a family together. Herb made his living as a salesman, a profession for which he seems to have been born. His work allowed for wide travel across the world which remained a passion for his whole life. He and Inge made pilgrimages to Australia, the Middle East, the Far East and all across Europe returning with stories and memories he was always eager to share. As an avid, life-long tennis player, one of his proudest travel achievements was managing to attend all the grand slam events in one year. Herb was, above all, the quintessential family man, providing support, encouragement and enthusiasm for any endeavor his daughters and granddaughters might undertake. He attended Lower Moreland High School sporting events just to watch his daughters cheerlead and flag twirl, was a superfan of his granddaughters’ soccer teams and a connoisseur of high school and college art exhibitions. Herb was a beloved man, survived by his daughters, Jacquelyn Siegel and Carolyn Mellin, son-in-law, Rick Mellin; granddaughters, Rebecah Ulm and husband, Nick Bevilacqua, Cassidy Mellin and wife, Carolyn Levin, Stephanie Ulm and husband, Edward Zukowski, and Tessa Mellin; and his great-granddaughter and namesake, Piper Ellis Mellin-Levin. A private family memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
