HELEN, passed away in Tucson AZ, on Sept. 17 2011. She was born in Dover DE, on Dec. 9, 1915. She trained as a nurse and later a physical therapist. She was an extraordinary woman who stunned people with her striking beauty, unique style, sharp wit, quick humor, keen intellect and unflinching strength of character. She was a captivating and eloquent speaker whose dramatic and literary gift for language engaged people in casual conversation as well as in the lectures and book reviews she delivered professionally. Emulated and loved by many young nieces, nephews and friends, she was a mentor and confident to many who treasured her wisdom and her profound philosophical insights. Her charismatic personality, winning smile and sparkling eyes enchanted strangers, friends, family and children alike. Many children and young people knew and loved her as "Mimi", an affectionate name created for her by her treasured grandson, Colin Gilmore. Her commitment to social justice resulted in many years of local, political and community involvement. She was a devoted mother and dedicated wife.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Solomon Raefsky; her beloved grandson, Colin Gilmore; her parents, Sam and Sonja Kolsky; and 6 siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Raefsky and Perry Gilmore, 3 grand-daughters, Elena (Gary) Houle, Jodi Smith and Cindy (Tom) Ryan; and 4 great grand-children, Lana Houle, Jesse, Seth and Cameron Meyer. Relatives and friends are invited to Funeral Services Thursday, 12 Noon precisely, GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL SACKS, 6410 N. Broad St. Ent. Montefiore Cem. Shiva will be observed at the home of Janet Theophano. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Colin Gilmore Memorial Fund, Univ. of Alaska Fairbanks, Develop-ment Office, P.O.
