Helen Goldstein

Helen Goldstein (nee Ettinger) passed away Sunday 05/28/2022, 101, North Wales PA.  She is survived by her two sons Steven and Neal Goldstein,

Born in 1920 to immigrant parents, Helen Goldstein was from a generation that expected to work hard. Only Yiddish was spoken at home and Helen entered public school without the ability to speak English. But her lifelong determination saw her through this first of many challenges and she graduated from West Philadelphia High School. As a teenager, she met a trio of girlfriends (Molly, Polly and Dolly), whose friendship would last a lifetime, and through them, met her future husband, Norman Goldstein, to whom she was married for 56 years until his death in 1996 Together they owned a number of grocery stores over the years.

The Goldstein household put a premium on schooling, and Helen urged her two sons in that direction. The older son is a retired communications executive and her younger son is a lawyer. After her husband’s passing, Helen volunteered her time as an office assistant at the Jewish Home for the Aged in Philadelphia, where she was recognized and acknowledge for her contributions. She was always determined to do the best possible job she could.

With equal determination she lived independently until her late 90’s. She liked to say that while she never learned to drive, she also never missed an appointment at the beauty parlor. After a fall and subsequent hip surgery she lived for two years with her grandson and his fiancée, who provided her with loving care during that time. Several months ago she moved the the Horsham Center for Jewish Life. Her wisdom and love will be missed by her sons and their wives, Steven and Nancee (nee Fisher), and Neal and Marilyn (nee Zatz), her four grandsons and her seven great-grandsons and great-granddaughter

Contributions in her memory can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
