Hannah Lichtenstein passed away early on the morning of March 13, 2025, in the personal care unit of Juniper Village, where she lived for 22 years. She passed in the company of facility staff, hours after having been surrounded by family and receiving Viduy, a last rights prayer from Rabbi Seth Frisch . She was 103 years old. Hannah was born to Tillie and Phil Shulman in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1921, along with Brother, Herb and sister Bea, to whom she remained close until their deaths. Hannah graduated high school at the early age of 15 and at 19 married Gerson, the love of her life, to whom she was married for 59 years. She gave birth to her daughter Elise in 1944 and her son Ken in 1949. Facing conventions which made it difficult for women, especially those of modest means, to peruse higher learning or leadership roles, Hannah showed her enterprising spirit and wit in novel ways. Hannah worked as a clerk. She taught private dancing lessons and bridge lessons. She teamed up with a neighbor to design and sell handbags directly to department stores. And she became a vital buyer, salesperson and business strategist in her husband’s family business - Rodeo Ben Western Wear. In addition to her enthusiasm for business, and numbers, Hannah had a passion for movement, games and words: she was an accomplished bridge and scrabble player, dancer, poet, and organizer. Near the end of her life she said that one of her proudest accomplishments was forming and leading the SHHH, which changed its name to Hearing Loss Association of America, a support and advocacy group for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Her playful spirit will be forever captured in her many clever poems and thoughtful writings.
Hannah is survived by her daughter, Elise and husband Harvey, her son, Ken and wife Paula, her four grandchildren, Perry, Ron, Jeffrey and Katie, and her four great-grandchildren, Daren, Audra, Reanna and Gavi.
A Graveside Service will be held at Roosevelt Memorial Park located at 2701 Old Lincoln Hwy, Trevose, PA 19053, on Monday 3/17 at 11:00 A.M..
