IN LOVING MEMORY OF

Grace

Hurwitz

May 5, 1927 – April 22, 2026

Obituary

Grace Hurwitz passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Elkins Park, PA on April 22, 2026, just two weeks short of her 99th birthday.

Grace is one of those rare people who was beloved by all who knew her. She was devoted to Marvin, her husband of 69 years, who passed away in 2020. Together they raised three daughters, Wendy (Allan Strawhacker), Jill, and Beth (Sam Vecchione) and she is survived in addition by four grandchildren, Amanda Strawhacker (Jeff Soyster), Rachel, Daniel, and Jenny Vecchione and two great-grandchildren, June and Henry Soyster.

Grace was born on May 5, 1927 to William and Raye Pozefsky and cherished the warmth of growing up in the small town of Nyack, New York. She was a star student, Valedictorian of her high school and then went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Russell Sage College. Grace then proceeded to get her Masters in International Relations from Yale, one of the few women at that time to achieve such a degree.

Grace and Marvin moved early in their marriage to the Philadelphia area where Grace taught first at Penn State and then spent the bulk of her career teaching Honors World Cultures at Cheltenham High School.

During her time at Cheltenham, Grace also served as President of the Teachers' Union and as Director of the Work Study program.

In her retirement, Grace became President of the REAP adult study program as well as serving as Reap's Permanent Director until her retirement from that position in 2014.

Grace was a gifted pianist who continued to play even up to her final days and, together with Marvin who was an avid opera lover, always filled their home with music. Grace and Marvin also traveled extensively, often bringing their children with them on trips.

Devoted family, loving marriage, useful professional work——this was a life well-lived and well-loved!
