Gloria Louise Greenberg (Gold), born November 24, 1939, in West Philadelphia. Proceeded in death by her loving and devoted parents, Philip Gold and Etta Gold (born Schectman) and younger brother Steven (who passed away at the tender age of 7). She was an extraordinary human being, wife, mother, and grandmother. Always reserved in nature, she shied away from the limelight, but made sure that her presence was known by always being there for her family. She never missed a chance to celebrate a family members birthday, holiday gathering, dinner, nor attend her grandchildrens recitals, concerts, and school events.
Before starting her family, Gloria graduated from West Philadelphia high school in 1957. Then, she attended business school for women where she quickly learned how to become a stenographer (although had times been different, Gloria would have easily earned an MD, JD or PHD after her name). She first worked for a local accountant as his trusted assistant and secretary. Thereafter, she gained employment at Bonwit Teller, Philadelphias premiere high-end fashion store, in the personnel/ human resources division, where she fit right in. Meticulous in her style, she never left the home without her hair, outfit, jewelry and make-up in check. This sense of togetherness served her well throughout her personal and professional life.
After being wooed by a handsome man, later husband, of fifty-six years, Sydney Greenberg, she began to raise her daughters, Stephanie (Duarte) and Rosalind (Karlin). Both Stephanie and Rosalind were blessed to have a mother as kind, loving, and devoted as Gloria. Even during the dreariest and rainiest days, Stephanie and Rosalind had so many adventures and activities to keep their minds sharp and hearts happy. Gloria encouraged her children to use their imaginations, sometimes by playing dress-up using all her fanciest jewelry and clothes, or other times by creating the most unique arts and crafts projects. Another unforgettable childhood memory from their childhood included being packed up every Sunday to head to Center City to explore the museums and finish the day by eating dinner in Chinatown.
Beginning in 1986, once her children grew up, Gloria worked for the Navy Supply Systems Command Weapons Systems Support Center for the next 20 years. She always achieved recognition from her colleagues due to her exemplary performance. Hired at the young age of 66, Gloria worked as a claims analyst for the Pennsylvania State Workers Compensation Board, where she was a highly valued employee, never missing a day of work nor arriving late, from 2006-2016. But for health issues, Gloria never would have retired.
Despite her humble roots, Gloria was a highly sophisticated, cultured, and intelligent person. Always an avid reader, and loyal watcher of PBS, she never missed watching and reading an Agatha Christie mystery nor a juicy British Drama (before Downton Abbey ever existed). Always a serious student, her knowledge of world cultures and history, opera, the arts, travel, cinema, and medicine were quite impressive. Always with a book in hand, especially those biographical in nature, her soprano voice could provide the most cynical person with a feeling of joy. Her self-taught oil paintings were magnificent, and her overall intellect often provided for excellent conversation.
Always proud of her daughters academic and professional achievements, Gloria made it possible for them to attend summer camps, university, and even law school through her sacrifices and unwavering support. Gloria never really wanted much for herself and was much happier giving whatever she could to her daughters and those in need. Even during her declining health, she still managed to volunteer at her grandchildrens school library.
Survived by husband Sydney, daughters Stephanie and sons-in-law Lou (Duarte) and Rosalind and Joseph (Karlin), grandchildren Isabella and Phillip (Duarte), and Madison, Kennedy, Grant and Tyler (Karlin). Gloria was a proponent of animal rights, prisoner rights, and the economically disadvantaged. Graveside funeral will take place this Thursday, December 30, 2021, at 2 pm sharp, Mount Sharon Cemetery, 502 E. Springfield Road, Springfield, Pennsylvania, 19064. Due to Covid, shiva will be observed virtually through Adath Jeshurun synagogue.
