Gilbert Klein

Gilbert Klein, a man of remarkable character and dedication, passed away on March 11, 2025, in Haddon Township, New Jersey. Born on August 28, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is predeceased by his devoted parents, Benjamin and Rebecca (Landau) Klein, loving son Lewis Klein and his devoted wife Yvonne Klein.

A proud veteran of the US Navy during World War II, Gilbert served honorably on a minesweeper in the Pacific Ocean. His service was a testament to his bravery and commitment to his country. In December 2024, he was recognized by Rep. Daniel Norcross for his military service and accomplishments, an honor reflecting the respect he commanded among those who knew him. He was very proud of his collection of military photos of every man he knew in his lifetime which he proudly displayed in his home.

Alongside his beloved wife of 63 years Anita (nee Gordon), whom he cherished deeply until her passing, Gilbert was a highly successful business owner. For two decades, he and Anita owned  and operated the popular West Philadelphia neighborhood store Gil's Discount. Their cheerful phrase "shop and compare, no lower prices anywhere" was displayed on the storefront window. Upon retiring, Gilbert did not rest; instead, he engaged with developing unique investment strategies that reflected his sharp intellect and passion for financial matters.

Born the third son of Benjamin and Rebecca, Gilbert was known for his modesty and strong family values. He fondly recalled the early days of helping his family with their business and learned the ropes from his older brother, Morris. Despite being TOO young, Morris would allow him to occasionally drive while making deliveries of goods from the store. His other older brother Arthur was studying to be a dentist and Gilbert often served as his "practice patient".

In his later years, Gilbert discovered a love for poetry and songwriting, dedicating time to record many of his works at a local studio. His sister Evelyn (Axler) was giddy to learn about and enjoy the secret talent her brother possessed. His creativity was a reflection of his depth and sensitivity, allowing him to express himself in ways that resonated with those close to him.

Gilbert is survived by his loving daughters, Janice Stanger and Barbara (Curt) Pordes, along with his proud grandchildren: Rebecca Stanger (Joe Miele), Angela Stanger (Dimitri Ioffe), Jacob Pordes (Maggie Medina), and Adam Pordes. He was also the adoring great-grandfather of Jude Gilbert Pordes.

Gilbert Klein will be remembered not only for his accomplishments and interests but also for his unwavering devotion to his family and community.
