Gerald Mathew Sapers, 89, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024. Son of Benjamin Lawrence Sapers and Edith Rosenburg, beloved husband of Eleanor (nee Clark) Sapers, father of Steven Sapers (Claire Green) and Tammy Solotoff (Eric). Loving and funny grandfather of Benjamin, Emily and Jaden. Doggrandfather to his beloved Gracie and Scout. Born January 17, 1935 in Boston Massachusetts, graduated MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts with Masters and PhD in Food Science in 1960. Served in the Army Quartermaster Corp at Natick Research Labs and then worked as a research scientist for Unilever (Tenafly, New Jersey) and the USDA (Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania), where he worked for 36 years until his retirement. Gerry was a lead scientist specializing in minimally processed fruit and vegetables, was highly published and globally recognized for his research work. Gerry was an active member of Old York Road Temple Beth Am and served as president of Brotherhood and supported many other temple activities. He was very active in Warrington Township, starting the fishing derby for Warrington Day, launched the senior hiking club, and was chairman of the Warrington Hike and Bike Committee. Gerry and Ellie loved to travel and had opportunities to visit and work in over a dozen countries around the world, making and sustaining many deep friendships along the way. He loved all animals, grilling, Jack Daniels, gardening, fishing in the Neshaminy Creek, going for drives in the country, listening to classical music and attending concerts at Temple, the Kimmel Center and DelVal.
Services will be held at 2PM on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Shalom Memorial Park, 3573 Pine Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA. A reception will follow at 4PM at Lamplighter Village Clubhouse located at 1900 Village Boulevard, Warrington. Shiva will follow Tuesday at the Clubhouse and Wednesday to Thursday at 7PM at the Sapers’ household. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made in his memory recognizing his love of all animals to the ASPCA or a local animal shelter.
