BRAGER
ESTELLE, a novelist, township supervisor and long-time Democratic committeewoman from Southampton PA, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014. She was 86 years old. Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Brager won the Philadelphia Mayor's scholarship for her high school and attended the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation in 1948, she and her husband, Irving Brager, moved to Bucks County and built a contemporary, solar-heated house in the intentional community of Bryn Gweled Homesteads. In 1954, she was elected Democratic committee-woman, a position she held for the next 59 years, making her longest serving Democratic committee woman in the county.
Estelle Brager wrote two novels, one a World War II suspense mystery and the other based on the memoirs of her grandmother's life in Russia. In 1977, she was elected to the Upper Southampton Board of Supervisors, where she served for 12 years. As the first female Chairperson of the Board, she welcomed Vice President George H.W. Bush on his visit to Southampton. As a supervisor, Estelle helped pass legislation against construction in the town's flood plains and led a successful effort to pass an open space referendum, which created a comprehensive law requiring the township to set aside specific open spaces for the community. In 1983, Estelle was appointed to the Board of the Bucks County Conservancy and served for 12 years.
She is survived by her husband, Irving; her sister, Rhoda Saitsky; her 4 children, Linda Bresler, Alison Bass, Paul Brager and Stuart Brager; and 11 grandchildren. There will be a Funeral Service at 11:30 A.M., on Thursday at
