ELAINE SOKOLOW

Elaine Laney Sokolow (76) was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 25th, 1943, daughter of Walter Weiss and Loretta Weiss (nee Cohen). She was raised in Wyndmoor, PA with her brother David. After graduating from Springfield High School in Montgomery County, she received her Bachelors degree in elementary education from Penn State University, and a Masters degree in education from Temple University. For four years, she was the head counselor for emotionally disturbed children at the Woods Schools Camp Willowood.

She then taught elementary school for more than thirty years in Ft. Washington, PA, Reading, PA, and Lawrence Township, NJ. She spent more than fifteen years teaching 4th grade in the gifted and talented student program at Lawrence Intermediate School.

She took a break from teaching to raise her sons, Brett and Brian. During that time, she took a position as a copy editor for the Messenger-Press in Allentown, NJ. Laney served on the library board of the local public library in Allentown for many years.

In 1974, she earned her Ph.T. (put him through) when her husband Steve earned his doctorate in education. For more than twenty-five years, she worked behind the scenes to support and help her husband in his role as Superintendent of Schools and contributed greatly to his success.

After retiring from teaching, she volunteered in the adult literacy program of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, helping to teach reading and prepare students for the high school equivalency exam. She was then asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen and received the New Jersey Jefferson Award for her long and distinguished public service in 2018.

Later that year, Laney and Steve relocated to Westlake Village, CA. Laney was gracious and generous to everyone she met. She loved helping people, never asked for credit, and dedicated her life to service. She was a loving person who cared about people, especially children and the disadvantaged. More than anything, she was dedicated to her family. She loved games and puzzles of all kind, and listening to the soundtrack of Hamilton, her favorite show.

She is survived by her husband of Stephen of 52 years, her brother David (Susan), her son Brett (Cori) of Westlake Village, CA and her son Brian (Barbara) of Bala Cynwyd, PA. Laney drew much joy from being a Grammy to her four extraordinary grandchildren, Gabrielle, Sebastien, Lyla, and Jonah, for whom she had so much pride.
