Elaine Petrov, teacher and friend to many, died May 29, 2026, at Wyncote Place, a memory care center in Cheltenham Township. She was 84 years old.
Born November 9, 1941, Elaine grew up in Philadelphia, graduated from Overbrook High School and earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees at Temple University. During her teaching career, she taught high school English and Spanish in the Philadelphia School District at Overbrook High, University City, and Franklin Learning Center. She also taught at Miquon Upper School, one of the progressive schools that emerged in the Philly area in the early 1970s, and at a Catholic school, Monsignor Bonner High School.
She fulfilled her high school yearbook promise of “revenge” on Overbrook High by starting her teaching career there. As a student and later as a teacher, she was known for her wit and for “enjoying unusual people.” She appreciated literature of all stripes, including humor, horror, and a Wallace Stevens poem well-explicated. She had a passion for especially large dogs, learning Italian, and consuming cheesesteaks on the regular.
Elaine was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Beatrice Petrov, her sister Fern Winneker, and her husband Robert Cargni-Mitchell. Elaine’s preference was that there should be no funeral for her. She will, however, remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
