E. Maxine
Arno
Jan 27, 1926 — Jun 15, 2026
Maxine Arno, 99, passed peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026. Born in the Logan section of Philadelphia to Reba & Michael Grossberg, a homemaker & salesman. Maxine met her future husband when she was 6 years old, and Irvin Arno, a friend of Maxine’s brother Norman, was 8.
Maxine had a happy childhood, stayed friends with her childhood friends, and graduated Germantown High School. While Irv was stationed in the South Pacific during WWII, he sent money home to his father so his dad could place an engagement ring on Maxine’s finger on her 18th birthday. They married in 1946, at which point, Irv, unexpectedly, decided to go to medical school on the GI bill. He reenlisted to pursue an education. Maxine worked as a bookkeeper for the next 5 years, putting Irv through school, and living alternately with each of their parents.
Maxine was a devoted wife, and their marriage lasted 69 years, until Irv passed away in 2015.
Their first home was in Mt. Airy, and later, they moved to their dream home in Laverock, Cheltenham. They had 3 children, Harold Jeffrey, Miriam Nita, and Steven Franklin. Maxine was a devoted mother, wife, and daughter. She was the most loving, encouraging, and considerate woman, and was everybody’s “Aunt Mac.” She listened without judgement, and saw the best in everyone. She never had an unkind word for anybody and was always a lady. She radiated pure love and joy and practiced gratitude.
Although she wasn’t raised in a socially active home, Maxine was the perfect hostess, giving beautiful dinner parties, holiday dinners, and extraordinary brunches. No one was alone on a holiday if they knew Maxine. She was a gracious hostess who made everyone feel welcome.
She and Irv travelled the world, including Irv’s frequent fishing trips. She was an avid bridge player, wicked Scrabble player, and finished her daily crossword puzzles in pen. She continued doing all the puzzles in her daily newspaper until her eyes failed, yet she continued doing her puzzles by listening to the clues and having someone else fill in the blanks.
They bought a second home in West Palm Beach and later decided to move permanently to Boynton Beach, Florida where they had a marvelous group of friends, and enjoyed hosting visiting friends and family.
She moved back to Warminster, PA, to Ann’s Choice after Irv passed away. She is predeceased by her parents, Reba and Michael Grossberg, her son Harold, and her beloved husband Irvin.
She is survived by her daughter Miriam (deceased husband Klaus), and her son Steven and his wife Sara, along with six grandchildren, Nechemiah and his wife Chana Sheera, Rifka, Hershel and his wife Etti, Chana and her husband Gershon, Mendel and his wife Raizy, and Jenna. She also was a proud great grandmother to 11: Devorah, Yaacov Yisroael, Zvi Hirsh, Yehuda, Rifka, Yehuda Tzvi Hirsh, Chaya Miriam (Mimi), Yisroel Nechemiah, Hadassah, Sophia and Charlotte. She was an adored Bubbie, and always had a special place in her heart for each and every child, grandchild and great grandchild.
She was a special aunt to Joel and Alan, Judy, Rachel and Ann, and their children. She was considered an aunt or grandmother by children of her closest friends and they often turned to her for advice.
She was generous with her love and concern, charitable and grateful. Someone said she was an icon and a legend. She was a classic. They don’t make them like Maxine anymore. She was a rare and valuable breed.
