Dr. Norman Schatz

Dr Norman Schatz passed away on Friday, June 28th at his home in Key Biscayne, FL, at the age of 88 after a short illness. Born and raised in Philadelphia and member of the 200th class of Central High School, Dr. Schatz was a beloved physician and teacher, and a pioneer in his field. He was Professor of Neuro-Ophthalmology at University of Miami School of Medicine and of Neurology at University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Schatz’s career spanned years of teaching and practice at University of Pennsylvania, Wills Eye Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and elsewhere. He traveled internationally as a visiting professor and guest lecturer. 

Dr. Schatz was an exuberant, funny, and joyful man with many friends from around the world. A master diagnostician and brilliant and compassionate physician, he was also a painter, a voracious reader, a lover of music and cooking, a traveler, and lover of life. 

Dr. Schatz’s pride and joy was his family and his many students who will carry on his legacy. He will be missed by them, and by his colleagues, patients, friends, and all the people he met on a daily basis whose lives he touched with his deep humanity. He is survived by his daughters Jodi Schatz (Dean Jerrehian), Amy Schatz (Max Rudin), and Jill Pinover (Wayne), his former wife Rhoda Schatz, his grandchildren Annie (Jarred), Matt, Michael, Emma, Livia, Eve, and Noah, great-grandchild Shai, and his sister Judith Cooper and brother Gerald Schatz (Linda).

Family and friends are invited to his funeral service on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at 1:30pm GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S Suburban North Chapel 310 Second St Pike, Southampton PA 18966. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park.
