Donald
Gable
d. October 14, 2026
Bala Cynwyd, PA
Donald Gable lived his 80 years to the fullest. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, his calm and steady presence enriched the lives of all of his family and friends. Don exemplified kindness, always ready to help others. His reliable care and support has been the bedrock of our family.
Born in Philadelphia in 1946, Don grew up in Overbrook Park with his brother Bruce and parents, Evelyn and Louis. Louis died while Don was still young, and Evelyn married Joseph Brooks a few years later, bringing a new father and sisters Lynne and Shelley into the family.
Don attended Overbrook High School and then Temple University, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and a Masters Degree in Education.
It was at Temple that Don met the love of his life, Phyllis. They wed in 1969, and 57 years of happy marriage followed, along with three children: Lance, Jessica, and Jordan. Later, they also welcomed to the family daughters-in-law Kineret and Hannah, and grandchildren Meira, Daisy, and Matilda.
Don taught 6th graders for several years after college, but changed careers a few years later to become a travel agent. He excelled in the travel business, helping thousands of people take the vacations of their dreams, and sometimes taking their calls in the middle of the night from halfway around the world to make sure they got to where they needed to go. He performed his work with persistence and creativity, just like he did all things.
A lifelong and enthusiastic Philadelphia sports fan, Don rooted for the Eagles in good times and bad. He was a music lover with a particular fondness for DooWop and Motown. And most of all he was a caring, thoughtful person, much-loved by all who knew him, who made the world and our lives better. We will miss him dearly.
